32 bit

Starting with 2, then 4, then 8, then 16, 32 was the next natural progression of chunking of data on your computer.

Previously: Detroit represent-in' plus the dog of the year >>
Next: 64-bit >>

Your computer is only as fast as the amount of data it can handle at one time. In the old days, computers handled 8 bits of data at a time. Then, as processers got better, it could handle double that. Now, machines can easily handle double that again.

There's an added advantage to being able to cram 32 bits at a time through the computer's processor: the computer has to be able to keep all those bits in order. And that means that a processor capable of handling 32-bit data can actually keep track of the addresses in 4 gigbytes of memory.

If you think 32 bits is cool, the next generation of operating systems and processors will be doubling up again - to 64 bit proccessing. It never ends, does it?

The Tomes of Delphi : Basic 32-Bit
By: Alan C. Moore
List Price: $59.95
Amazon Price: $49.28

Product Description
Delphi is the premier development tool within Windows computing, and communications is one of the fastest growing segments of the Windows development platform. The Tomes of Delphi: Basic 32-Bit Communications Programming focuses on two essential communications technologies?Windows Sockets and the Telephony Application Programming Interface?and provides a guide to using them in Windows applications.

The book is divided into sections on Winsock and TAPI. Each section begins with an introductory chapter on that particular technology and following chapters discuss basic TAPI and Winsock programming and their functions. Each function entry contains the syntax, a description of what the function does, a list and description of parameters, acceptable constant values, return values, cross-references to related functions, and an example of its use. Where appropriate, the authors develop wrapper classes and components to further facilitate communications programming.

The appendixes include a glossary of communications terms and Winsock and TAPI error codes.

Obesity and Smoking Trends Over Time
I've been trying to look at whether or not increases in chronic illnesses can be linked to changes in the food system over the past century. I agree that it's not necessarily accurate to look at obesity alone as a proxy for "diet-related chronic illness" but the other data? Well it's a bit harder to come by. The really tricky thing to factor in is that smoking went down while obesity went up. Oh - and the CDC - bless them - gives smoking statistics over time for all ages but split between men an • Understanding Leveraged ETFs
You?ve probably heard about leveraged ETFs: Funds designed to deliver twice or even three times the return of their benchmarks. Just last week, ProShares launched the first triple-leveraged ETFs tied to the S&P 500 index. ProShares UltraPro S&P 500 (UPRO) is a 3x ETF for bulls, while ProShares UltraPro Bear S&P 500 (SPXU) is a 3x leveraged inverse ETF. What a deal! Wouldn?t it be great to double or triple your gains? Far be it from me to throw water on the party, but • 68 Ways How To Stand Out From The Crowd

As a political writer and blogger, I applaud the decision of the Minnesota Supreme Court that effectively made Alan Stuart Franken the junior senator from Minnesota for the next six years.Of course, it?s not such a good thing for Republicans, considering that the Democrats have added another body to their already huge majority. But Franken in the Senat
