Daryl: Hi David.

David Lawrence: Hi there.

Daryl: I just want to know, what*s the Mac OS X 10.4 application Automator? What you can actually do with it?

David Lawrence: Automator is a way that you can build your own Macros. Are you familiar with what macros are?

Daryl: Yeah.

David Lawrence: Yeah well it's like macros but it's akin to having macros at a very basic level in the operating system. First of all they operate very, very quickly say great example is say you are taking a whole bunch of photos that you have scanned in Photoshop and you want to CP atone them. Now there is a couple of steps involved there in cropping and resizing and so on and you can actually set up Automator to step you through the process automatically so you don*t have to keep going to all the menus repetitively.

Daryl: I see so you don*t have to do the clicking and --

David Lawrence: Exactly.

Daryl: Over and over.

David Lawrence: And so an Automator can work with almost any piece of software in the new operating system and any piece of software that is Automator aware. There is actually a great book on how to use Automator over at www.spiderworks.com. It's a guide to using Automator with the new features of Tiger with some of the applications involved with Tiger. When I went the night back in April the end of April when Tiger was released as I walked into the Apple Store at the Grove here in Los Angeles they were demonstrating how to use Automator with the new stuff with the visually impaired on the operating system. And it was really a fascinating thing because once it's set up you don*t have to worry about doing it any more. You can invoke it any number of different ways either with a short you know an alias icon or with a command key and it's great. And it's built into the system and this to me is sort of with mixed emotions that I tell you about this because for the longest time I have used something called Quick Keys which has been around forever and it's great and my friends run the company and my friends who is the PR person. Well Apple has done over the years a number of times what Microsoft has done as well is they have taken really cool utilities and really cool little features that other independent software designers have done and incorporated them right into the system. And that*s kind of ruined the market for those independent software designers that have that particular product. But in this case it works at a different level than Quick Keys does. It works at a system level and it's really cool. It's really worth checking out and it's a great question. I appreciate the call. 180039 online 18003966546. Richard you are Online Tonight with David Lawrence, hello.

Richard: Hi David I appreciate you taking the call.

David Lawrence: Thank you.
