Steve: Hi David. I have a question for you about a hardware router or rather a hardware firewall that I have of course it came with my hardware router. It*s the very latest, Linksys.

David Lawrence: It*s okay, it*s okay.

Steve: That*s it is, absolutely.

David Lawrence: Yeah.

Steve: And this version 3. It*s the one that*s commonly found in the stores for the four port wired router and I have recently come across a version 2 which I am considering purchasing for a friend used. And I want to ask you if I upgrade that firmware with the firmware flash that Cisco provides will it be the same router as my brand new version 3?

David Lawrence: That*s a question for Cisco. I don*t know if it will be if it says it upgrades it to version 3 of the firewall then I would believe that. I mean its just changing the PROM chip. So it is not a big deal. If it is actually putting all of that same functionality and capability I don*t know I have never flashed one, they are so inexpensive that you know. What are you buying the used one for $5 instead of $10?

Steve: No, no. It just a copy so I am getting the used one for 30-35 bucks.

David Lawrence: So it*s about a half of what you pay for a new one and so that*s good. I would check with Cisco first and you know sending a message to support at Linksys.com actually works.

Steve: Great.

David Lawrence: So I would check with them first. I have never had an opportunity to do a flash upgrade. But I wouldn*t imagine that if the upgrade is available on the Cisco side on the Linksys side and it says it brings it up to version 3.0. They are not charging for that upgrade?

Steve: As far as I know they are not.

David Lawrence: Wow.

Steve: I mean I guess if you bought the modem or you wrote the upgrade somewhat like that.
