Back in a moment.
David Lawrence: Geek speak phrase for this hour we take a tech term and turn it into plain English before you are very ears is HTTP and you see that all the time at the beginning of URLs on web pages. We will tell you what that means in just a moment. This portion of the show is powered by www.godaddy.com whenever I need to pump up my web presence I use www.godaddy.com they are now the number 1 domain registrar in the known universe. No one is larger. Their live 24x7 service can*t be beat. Just a place you go to get www.yourdomainnamehere.com things like that plus E-mail web presence security certificates, want to get to a website space you can get all of that in fact anything you buy at www.godaddy.com I can save you 10% off just because you listen to this show and you can share this with your friends here. When you check out to www.godaddy.com there is a little box that says if you have a promo code type it in here. And here is your promo code Save Ten make your name with www.godaddy.com and don*t forget we have helped them put together Radio GoDaddy as well it's there corporate Podcast at www.radiogodaddy.com as well alright cool. So HTTP that is this hours* Geek Speak and it stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol. Of course it does. When you see HTTP at the beginning of the URL what you are actually seeing is probably the most obvious look behind the scenes that how the web operates that is called a service prefix. When you tell a server to send you data or to get data or to put data you tell it how you want that data set around the web and with HTTP that*s what a browser uses. A browser says okay send the data my way and I don*t really care much for you to check to make sure I got here okay because usually I will get here just fine. So just go ahead and send it and if there is an issue we will ask forward again manually as opposed to FTP which is File Transfer Protocol. Instead of sending hypertext to you Hypertext Transfer Protocol and HTTP File Transfer Protocol now that protocol is little bit different in that it says the servers will check to make sure the data got there in good shape. Send a chunk see if it's right if it's right send the next chunk if it's not resend the chunk that didn*t get send properly. So HTTP Hypertext Transfer Protocol says send me the data at this particular address and that address can be www.foo.com put your domain in there however you want http://www.foo.com in our case www.onlinetonight.com and it's assumed that if all of you have is the domain name www.onlinetonight.com then send me whatever is at index.html or default.html or index.php or whatever the default pages sitting at the root level of that server and that*s the main page of everyone*s site. So to shorten up a little bit all you have to do is to put the domain name and in fact in most browsers you don*t even need to put in http://www. but it's a good idea to do so because a lot of servers are set up to require the www. Most are not but some are so that*s what that*s all about http:// bring the text via Hyper Text Transfer Protocol. Whatever follows that :// that*s what HTTP stands for. This portion of the show brought to you by *Mac OS X Unwired*, the new book by Tom Negrino and Dori Smith, a complete guide to wireless information for Mac users. If you are thinking of going wireless as a connection to the Internet or a network of computers together, this book will show you what Mac OS X is capable of doing www.macosxunwired.com. After a 30 year career on radio in markets from New York to San Francisco to satellite and network, David H. Lawrence XVII decided to make a change. He hung up his headphones and retired from hosting 3 network/satellite radio shows to head to Los Angeles, to concentrate solely on acting in front of the camera.
Lili VonSchtupp* needed a fresh start. She moved to Washington DC and got her dream job. "I did affiliate relations for Online Tonight with David Lawrence. I slowly worked my way into the producer's chair by impressing David with my assets. (not those assets), my ability to make a CAT5 cable Ethernet cable, type (those of you in the chat room-shut up!) and work a phone system.
