David Lawrence: Well Retrospect actually allows you to backup multiple computers to one backup set whether it*s RAID array or whether it*s an individual hard drive. You can do both. You can do individual hard drives. We actually had an instant message just a moment ago that reminded me about something. Make sure that you backup at least two different external devices. One that you remove from the home you know and poor Spike on WGN in Chicago had a bit of an issue with his house catching fire. Let*s just hope that you know his stuff was saved along with his valuables but that*s exactly the kind of disaster that I talk about when I say take and rotate the media. You know have a hard-drive that you take with you to work, if you backup your home machines, when you bring home if you are backing up your work machines but you can do all of that. How big are the hard drives on all three machines?
Chris: One is 250, one is I think one is around 80 and then there is one computer with 2 hard-drives with a total about I am going to say probably about 60 to 70 gigs.
David Lawrence: Right so the problem there is they don*t make hard drives much larger than 300 gigs unless you want to pay through the nose for them.
Chris: Right.
David Lawrence: And in particular the Maxtor One Touch is they have reached the point where the line has been crossed 300 bucks for 300 Gigs. And so it probably will be a good idea to do two of those for the one that has a 250 and link them together, span them and then do an individual one for each one of the other two machines but yes.
Max: I just have a question. I think Retrospect will allow you to take those backup sets for the smaller drives, put them on the 250 and then you could backup the 250 using Retrospect or would you recommend having the separate sets as opposed to putting the smaller hard drive sets onto that central 250?
David Lawrence: Well what I was saying you should get more than one 250 gig drive. You are saying backup to the hard drive on the 250 first and then backup to the spanned hard drives?
Max: Yes. Retrospect will give you that option. I am just wondering if you think it*s effective or not.
David Lawrence: I don*t know. I mean that*s how much of the 250 gig drive do you have taken up and can you give up a 120 gigs.
Max: Well that's yeah that's a good point.
David Lawrence: You know.
Chris.
David Lawrence: I don*t know that*s the question. But I don*t know I mean I would look into RAID arrays as well. I mean I am slowly but surely moving everything over to RAID arrays here with Max*s help as he is a RAID guy. But the problem is one of size. You have such large hard drives on one machine now that you are going to need more than one hard drive to backup that machine in particular. And you are going to need a large drive to backup the smaller machines as well. So you are in for atleast a $1000 in drive expenses but then how much is your data worth I mean you never know. You could lose something that could be very costly to you, you never know. That*s why I say backup every thing. Don*t leave it up to chance. We will take a break. We will come back. After a 30 year career on radio in markets from New York to San Francisco to satellite and network, David H. Lawrence XVII decided to make a change. He hung up his headphones and retired from hosting 3 network/satellite radio shows to head to Los Angeles, to concentrate solely on acting in front of the camera.
Lili VonSchtupp* needed a fresh start. She moved to Washington DC and got her dream job. "I did affiliate relations for Online Tonight with David Lawrence. I slowly worked my way into the producer's chair by impressing David with my assets. (not those assets), my ability to make a CAT5 cable Ethernet cable, type (those of you in the chat room-shut up!) and work a phone system.
